Do you need a rental vehicle in Astypalaia? Yes — almost certainly. The island has one main road connecting Chora to Maltezana, a small bus that runs only a few times a day between the main villages, and a handful of taxis. If you want to reach any of the best beaches, you will need your own transport. Here is everything you need to know.

🔑 The short answer

Do you actually need to rent a vehicle?

Astypalaia is 97 square kilometres — large enough that you cannot walk everywhere, but small enough that you can drive from one end to the other in about 90 minutes on the main road. The public bus connects Chora with Livadi, Pera Gialos and (seasonally) Maltezana — but only 4-5 times per day and not to most beaches.

If you are staying in Chora and plan to spend your time in the castle, the windmills, the village, and the nearby beaches of Livadi and Pera Gialos — you can manage without a vehicle. But if you want to see any of the beaches that make Astypalaia special (Vatses, Kaminakia, Vathy, Blue Harbour), a rental vehicle is essential.

Which vehicle — honest comparison

🚙
Suzuki Jimny
from €35/day
The iconic choice for Astypalaia. Small, extremely capable off-road, fun to drive. The open-top version is the vehicle most associated with this island. Gets everywhere — Vatses, Kaminakia, Vathy — without difficulty.
✅ All beaches accessible

✅ Most fun to drive

⚠️ Small — 2 passengers + luggage max
🚙
Dacia Duster SUV
from €35/day
More space than the Jimny — 5 seats, larger boot. Still capable on all dirt roads. Ideal for families or groups of 3-4. The sensible 4WD choice if you need more room.
✅ All beaches accessible

✅ 5 seats, proper boot

⚠️ Less nimble than Jimny on tight tracks
🚗
Small car (Fiat Panda, Kia Picanto etc)
from €25/day
Fine for main road driving: Chora, Livadi, Maltezana, Agios Konstantinos. Not suitable for the rough dirt roads to Vatses, Kaminakia or Vathy. The cheapest option but limits where you can go.
✅ Budget option

✅ All tarmac destinations

⚠️ Cannot access best beaches
🛵
Scooter (125cc–200cc)
from €10/day
Excellent for the main road between Chora and Maltezana — one of the most scenic rides in Greece. A 200cc scooter can manage some of the easier dirt roads carefully. Not recommended for Vatses or the roughest tracks. Requires A1 motorcycle licence for 125cc.
✅ Best for the scenic main road

✅ Budget-friendly

⚠️ Not suitable for hardest dirt roads
🏍️
ATV / Quad (450–550cc)
from €25/day
The ATV is capable on rough terrain and fun to ride. Can handle most dirt roads that a regular scooter cannot. A legitimate alternative to a 4WD car for solo travellers or couples without much luggage.
✅ Off-road capable

✅ No car licence needed

⚠️ Limited storage, exposed to sun and rain
Electric car (VW e-Up)
from €25/day
Astypalaia is one of Greece's first green islands with multiple EV charging points. The VW e-Up has ~258km range — more than enough for the entire island (longest route is under 30km). Not suitable for rough dirt roads but perfect for tarmac exploration.
✅ Zero emissions

✅ Sufficient range for the whole island

⚠️ Not for off-road tracks

Driving in Astypalaia — practical tips

The basics

The main road (Chora–Maltezana)

The primary tarmac road connecting Chora to Maltezana is well-maintained and runs through dramatic mountain scenery with sea views on both sides. The drive takes 20-25 minutes and is itself an attraction. Many visitors take a scooter specifically for this ride.

The dirt roads

The dirt roads to Vatses, Kaminakia, Vathy and Panormos are genuinely rough. Not dangerous if you drive slowly and carefully in a proper 4WD — but they will damage a regular car's undercarriage and are genuinely impassable after heavy rain. Proceed slowly. Use low-range 4WD if your vehicle has it. Do not rush.

⚠️ Important: Do not attempt the dirt roads to Vatses, Kaminakia or Vathy in a regular car. We have rescued several guests who did not take this warning seriously. The vehicle damage and towing costs are substantial. A 4WD from us costs €35/day — far less than a recovery.
